Nothing quite beats the first day of mission…
The excitement and anticipation were overflowing. Energy levels were high (despite the 40 degree heat) and we were eager for whatever came our way! For some of us this was our first Moore College mission, and for others our fourth and final (God-willing)!
This year we made it to the south-west of Sydney and had found ourselves partnering alongside churches and people who wanted to see Christ known in every household. The first stop for our team was Macarthur Indigenous Church. This would be our base for the week as we learnt more about ministry to Indigenous Australians.
We were welcomed with open arms and introduced as family. Jum preached from Ephesians 3 and Joe shared his testimony of finding ultimate acceptance not from his own efforts but from God through Christ.
There were a number of highlights including Grimmo getting hit square in the head with a ball by a playful 2 year old (Jess’ personal fave), and an invite to a 90s rnb skate rink later in the week ….but one standout was definitely meeting Aunty Jenny – an amazing, faithful woman who had helped establish the church over 20 years earlier.
After sharing some watermelon (essential on a day like yesterday) and a cup of tea, we left for a time of admin and fellowship with the other Macarthur teams. The afternoon was then spent meeting billets, with homes being generously opened up to us for the week. Some of us were thankful for aircon and others the chance to play with a cute pet (or three).
At night we visited a number of different churches in the area – with Ben preaching at Narellan Anglican Church and Evan at St John’s Camden on Luke 7 – Jesus is Compassion. For those of us at Camden we were warmly greeted and encouraged. As someone who loves a good chat and could talk underwater this was the church for me! The excitement and fervour people had to see their friends and community come to know Jesus was infectious. Tickets were selling fast to the various events they had planned and people were eager to share their Jesus is ____ statement with anyone who would listen.
After a long day we headed home for some rest. It was an early start this morning with leafletting at stations from 6 am … but more about that in another next blog post.
For now all I can say is that if today was anything to go by, this is going to be a GREAT week! It was a wonderful reminder of the fellowship we have in Christ and a small glimpse at what is to come when Jesus returns.
