Watsons Bay offers a great view of Sydney Harbour. It’s a pleasant ferry ride from Circular Quay and there’s well-known fish and chip shop Doyle’s to stop for lunch. These are just a few reasons why Watsons Bay regularly attracts tourists. As our team has gone out to do walk up in the community, we’ve met a lot of visitors from overseas with whom we’ve had some great chats.
Here’s just a few stories:
James met a guy from France who has a Catholic background but doubts the miracles of Jesus. James was able to share about the historicity of Jesus’ resurrection and why it matters that Jesus died and rose to life again. You can thank God that this French tourist wanted to keep chatting, even though it meant he missed four buses! At the end of the conversation James was able to pray with this guy that he would find salvation in Christ.
Tom and Jie met a group of American tourists. One of the group had a Seventh Day Adventist background, but wasn’t really sure what he believed. Tom and Jie were able to challenge him to consider the true identity of Jesus as God’s Son and the saviour of the world.
While helping two German tourists with some car trouble, Dan was able to strike up a conversation about church. Turns out these two men had met some of our team the day before. One of our chaplains, Caroline, just happens to be a former missionary to Germany. She’d been able to share the gospel with them in their own language and recommend some churches for them to check out when they return home.
Mark and Faraj met an American couple with an interest in church organs. Faraj remembered reading a plaque about the organ in the heritage listed St Peters building – the instrument had once belonged to Napoleon Bonaparte. This unique fact led to them giving the couple a tour of the church building and opened up a conversation about God.
Is God a pacifist?
This is the topic that Tom led discussion on at a wine and cheese night the church hosted. The event was particularly held for officers who live at the navy base down the road. One of the navy officers who came is a Christian and has been attending the church regularly. He invited several friends, none of whom came. Please pray for him not to be discouraged, but to keep seeking to share the gospel with his fellow officers.
You can also thank God for the church members who came and enjoyed the night. As Assistant Minister Dan plans more discussion nights like this one, please pray that congregation members would invite friends and family along. Pray that church members would look to the Bible for answers and insight in all things.
