This morning was a super-early start as the Youth team had to be at the local high-school by 8:30am. So Dan didn’t get to recite the Dorothea Mackellar poem he had practiced in a bogan Aussie accent. We got to hear it in the car on the way there, instead.
Ben, the assistant minister, usually does the high-school talks and had us lined up to do four back-to-back sessions with years 7-10 in the high-school gym. Year 7 time got eaten into a bit by role-call, so I felt like we were constantly on the back-foot for their session. But our basic sessions ran with me MC-ing, Paul doing the OT talk about God’s promise to David and Gladwin doing the NT talk about God’s promise to us. Year 8 was a little tricky to get sitting still but they were good quality. Years 9 and 10 actually listened the best and appeared to engage in the group discussions really well. After the sessions, we used lunch-time to meet with the Christian kids who shot some questions at a panel of Moore students. They came up with some curly ones such as “My friend who isn’t saved said she doesn’t believe in it because women are told to be silent.”
While half the team was off at Gunnedah High, the other half were occupied with the younger folk at Gunnedah South Primary School. We taught nine classes, bringing God’s word to about 180 kids. It was a heartwarming experience for much of the team. When asked how he and Joel fared, Alan simply said “Smashed it”. Rachelle, the debutante to the world of SRE, did a wonderful job teaching from Genesis. Scott had a swarm of year 1 kids hug him upon saying goodbye. James, Tom and Chris all commented on how glad the kids were to learn about Jesus. Pray that these kids would continue to have access to God’s word, and that seeds planted might germinate and flourish into faith and hope in the future.
This evening, half the team had dinner at Breeza. But I don’t know how this went as I was with the half of the team that went to Youth Games at the high-school. We had an absolute blast! The kids were great, although I think Ben was disappointed by the numbers as they were lower than usual even though he had plugged the event at the high school seminars. It was raining, which was great, but could also have kept some of the usual kids from coming. Half-way through his talk, Gladwin broke out into Michael Jackson karaoke. And he also proclaimed it was a sin to de-friend people on facebook. But the talk was great and we will hopefully see the kids again at Youth tomorrow night.
