Tom Ong, Jimmy Shepherd & myself have been walking around with an old camcorder, interviewing strangers on the streets and beaches of Forster. Complete with Alex Backler’s chunky headphones and a hand-held mic (purely for the ‘professional look’), we’ve been asking strangers for their opinions about God, Christianity and the deep questions of life.
“What do you do when you’ve really messed up?”
“Is there anything about Christianity or the Bible that you think is rubbish or weird?”
“If you could ask God one question, what would it be?”
The responses have been varied. However, over the days, we’ve begun to see a common pattern: people in Forster have virtually no idea about Jesus.
The ignorance is astonishing. It’s been a massive wake-up call for us; for while we’re spending years delving into the riches of theology and the Bible’s original languages, the rest of Australia is starved of the gospel and being pumped full of misinformation.
Whilst it makes you feel sad, it’s also strangely motivating. It makes you want to do something. We’ve been given the privelege of being entrusted with the world’s message of hope: a message that looks bizarre and backward, but ironically is the only thing that can save us all from our sins: Jesus Christ, the Son of God, crucified as a sacrifice in our place and raised to life forever.
