One of the most wonderful strengths of Mission in Parramatta is the great diversity of people and cultures that reside within the one city. St John’s Parramatta wants to celebrate cultural differences within the city whilst also declaring unity around Christ despite the vast array of differences in culture and heritage. One of the ways they do this is by hosting a Gujarati Christian Fellowship Service.
Our team member Kathrynn Russell gives you an inside look at how this works out for the Gujarati speaking Indian culture that resides within Parramatta:

“On Saturday night Joanna, Simon, Ben and I attended the Gujarati Christian Fellowship (GCF) service. The members travel from all over Sydney to meet once a month in Parramatta, so that they can enjoy Christian fellowship with people from their own language group. Many GFC members also attend churches closer to their homes on a weekly basis. The night was particularly focused upon inviting friends. It was an attractive invitation for Gujarati people regardless of their religion because it presented an opportunity to connect with the Gujarati community in Sydney.
The program included singing, dancing and dramatic items from both adults and children. There were prayers, a presentation about sin by a GFC member and a bible talk by our own Ben George. Ben spoke from John 14:1-6, explaining that through his death and resurrection, Jesus has prepared a place in heaven for those who trust in him. He clearly presented the exclusivity of Jesus’ claim, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. This was a real challenge to everyone who attempts to approach God through their own good deeds, or who believe that ‘all paths lead to heaven’.
After the service, we enjoyed an Indian meal together and had good opportunities to speak to people about what they think of Jesus’ claims. It was an evening filled with lovely company, beautiful outfits, delicious food and abundant gospel opportunities.”
