What is Moore College Sunday?
Moore College Sunday is a day when we partner with local churches to invite people to pray for the College, its work, the churches it serves and its students, graduates, staff and faculty, and ask people to get involved in the College community. When Moore College has a need, we know that the most important thing to do is pray. For over a century, God’s people have been praying for the college, and when they’ve prayed, God is never slow in answering.
Our college, which continually grows and expands to nurture more and more men and women seeking to grow in Christ, is built on the prayers of people like you. Join the generations of God’s people who have carried every one of Moore’s needs to the throne of grace and partner with us on Moore College Sunday. Moore College Sunday is officially held annually on the first Sunday of August – Sunday 1 August 2020. If you can’t hold Moore College Sunday on 1 August at your church or gathering, that’s OK. We value your prayers and support of our College, and will have resources available for the rest of the year!
The resources and other details will be updated in early 2021.
Moore College Sunday Principal's Welcome
In God’s great kindness, he put it in the heart of Thomas Moore, a pastoralist on the outskirts of Sydney, to set aside money on his death towards the founding of a College ‘for the education of … youths of the Protestant persuasion in the principles of Christian knowledge’. Since its opening some one hundred and sixty years ago, God has provided for Moore College at every point in its life. He has given it a succession of godly, learned and skilled teachers, from the single tutor with which it began to the twenty full-time faculty of today. He has brought thousands of students to the College — generations of men and women have studied for a life-time of discipleship and disciple-making at Moore College. He has provided generous friends, wise administrators and a diligent, dedicated staff. All that we at the College have enjoyed over the past century and a half has been the kind gift of our loving heavenly Father. We must never lose our sense of dependence upon God and his grace towards us.
This year has brought us all new challenges and has heightened that sense of dependence. The COVID-19 pandemic has meant we have had to adjust how we teach as well as how we mentor and pastor our students. In God’s kindness, this has come at a time when we have been able to hold classes, chapel, chaplaincy groups and one-to-one meetings all online. We have lost a great deal (social meeting together, lunches together, etc.) but we have still been able to continue the vital work of preparing the next generation gospel workers. We have much for which we can and must thank God.
We have been praying that one outcome of this pandemic will be a new openness to the gospel not only in our city and country but around the world. Our self-confidence and self-reliance has been shaken and there is a real sense of things being out of control. Many are logging in to online church services who might not ordinarily come to church. Conversations about what this all means and the lessons we need to learn are happening all around us. Even as the lockdowns are eased we are aware it could all happen again. We are not able to guarantee our own futures. It has been foolishness to try.
We trust that our heavenly Father will raise up a new generation of workers to make the most of this opportunity. We need people who know and love God’s word, who understand the world into which they must speak it, and love the people who so desperately need to hear it. He has promised to do just that in answer to the prayers of his people. Will you join us in such prayer?
